About Toto

The band Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also well-known studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word meaning "all inclusive," the group was intent on exploring all styles of music.

In 1981, Toto's third album Turn Back is a failure, but they rebound with their fourth release Isolation which contains two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and their tour helped them become a household name across the globe.

After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It's a change from the ballads of previous albums and features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.

In the course of recording the fifth album, the group loses its manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to record a new album and change their name with a different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, replaces Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
