The only issue it has is that it can smash into walls and other objects at full speed - but just a glance at the cleaning history within the app will show you exactly what it's doing as well as where it's heading and the obstacles it's avoided.

It's the most expensive of the three models I've examined, but it's also feature-packed. Its sleek, angular design is eye catching, and it only has three physical buttons. The power button, which restarts the cleaning, a mop button that doubles up as a child-lock and a home-button that can bring the robot to its dock. The hinged lid opens to reveal a 350ml trash bin and 200ml water tank. The water tank automatically empties and the bin fills up automatically.

The only drawback I could find to this model was that the VibraRise mop pads mount isn't movable. It is possible to replace the mopping cloth if required, but it's a challenge to take the mount off for manual washing. I've found that any plush carpet that the robot touches will come into contact with the rough Velcro-like fastener system on the mount, and that can cause abrasions.

The S8 Pro Ultra has a variety of smart features, including support for Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Siri. The Roborock app lets you manage and set up these features. It also has maps and advanced mopping options. The app also lets you to schedule cleanings and monitor the life of batteries and maintenance on components. However, you'll need to jump through a few hoops in order to allow voice control with this model which is a pity considering how well it performs otherwise.

3. Dreame X40
