How to Replace an Audi Q7 Replacement Key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

toyota-logo-2020.pngIt is a little tricky to test as there are several connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, as i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, for example. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly in the case of a Bosch sensor like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for numerous problems in your car.
