Sony will finally release CFexpress Type A cards with 320GB and 640GB capacities in November. Until now, Sony's CFexpress Type A cards were only available in 80GB and 160GB capacities, so video users and others have been calling for larger capacity Type A cards. This means that the cards are no longer so inferior in terms of capacity to the CFexpress Type B cards used by other manufacturers. However, while the price of a 512GB Type B card is around 50,000 yen, Sony's Type A 640GB card is incomparably more expensive at 187,000 yen. It has not yet been released, so it is difficult to say, but how many users will use this large capacity Type A card? Sony's Type A card is very small, and its main feature is that it can be made into a double slot without making the camera body larger. In addition, Sony's recording media slot is compatible with Type A cards and SD UHS-II cards, so it has the advantage of being able to use either one. If you want a low-cost, large-capacity card, you can just buy an SD UHS-II card instead of a Type A card. However, the transfer speed of SD cards is about 300MB/s, which is much slower than the 800MB/s of Type A cards. For this reason, some functions of cameras such as the α1 cannot be fully utilized unless Type A cards are used. In this way, it seems that Type A cards will be difficult to spread unless the price drops significantly. That said, there are many cameras where it is difficult to use Type B cards in double slots due to their size unless they coexist with SD UHS-II. Type B also has its own dilemma, but it is obvious that SD UHS-II will eventually have to be replaced with CFexpress cards using the PCIe protocol. If not, the transfer speed (maximum 1700MB/s) will be held back by the transfer speed of SD UHS-II cards. In that case, if Type A cards are adopted, it will be a strong support for Sony, but what will happen? There is also the option of SD Express, so the future of recording media is still unclear. P.S. Leica Camera AG will release the rangefinder film camera, the Leica M6, in November. The price is 748,000 yen (tax included). It is a reproduction of the Leica M6 released in 1984. The rangefinder and other parts have been improved. The company will also reproduce the Summilux-M 35mm F1.4 released in 1961. The price is 572,000 yen (tax included).
