Kia-Motors-New-2021.pngHow to Replace an audi a3 keys G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two connector pins and they perform different functions but the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this sensor, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I put tissue over each injector hole and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is connected but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor key for audi the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

Porsche-New-2023.png3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines requires to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or an unfire when in the gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. The good news is that they are very affordable and easy to find, especially if you're looking at an Bosch model, which is what we have. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of issues in your vehicle. It is a crucial part of your audi key shell's transmission, as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It sends a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU is then able to process this signal to regulate fuel, timig, and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see an average resistance of 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a standard component across the audi a4 key replacement 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones could be available in wrecking yards.
